About Us

At the heart of the community

Kirkdale Bookshop is probably the oldest independent bookshop in South East London., opening in 1966. It has gradually expanded over the years, so that now it has an extensive range of new and second-hand books over two floors. In 2002 a small art gallery was built, adding a new dimension to the shop.

Apart from books and artwork, we have a beautiful range of greetings cards and wrapping paper.

Our interesting selection of gifts includes notebooks, diaries, bookmarks and mugs. We are also stockists of Naxos Classical CDs.

Our children's section has books, cards and toys. We also have a regular storytime for little ones on Saturday mornings.

Kirkdale Bookshop has become a focal point in the community, hosting many cultural events, including author signings, local artists' exhibitions and children's events. We have a bookgroup, two writers' groups and  host a philosophy group run by "The Philosophy Shop".

In the summer we are the box office for Sydenham International Music Festival.

Our friendly staff are always on hand to advise and help you find just the right book or gift for your needs.

If we do not have the book you require we will happily order it. We are able to obtain many books within 24 hours.

We were delighted be awarded  "Best Customer Service" in the Lewisham Business Awards 2005.

In 2008 we were just pipped at the post in the WHO DO YOU LOVE? public vote (by a hairdressers in Honor Oak!)
